Introduction

If you are a newcomer to a photographic club and competition photography, it is likely that you’ve encountered a moment, where the judge suggests, very casually, that your image would be even better if you blah, blah. Then you start wondering if the judge has flown in from another planet speaking pure gobblede-techo-gook. You might even be right!
Typical judge’s feedback includes:

“Consider Cropping blah, blah, blah” The crop tool — Does a lot more than you might think.

”The image is on a tilt blah, blah” — How to fix the tilts or deliberately put one in.

”Your foreground has a lot of rubbish blah, blah — clone some out.” How to clone and clean up the clutter.

”The shadow areas are a bit dark. Try lifting shadows a bit.” How to make the shadows lighter. Including Histograms, levels, and curves

”Your image would be better if the eyes and brows were sharper” How to sharpen successfully. The optical illusion of sharpening, the halo, and the structure method.
If there is time, a bonus session on How to resize images for projection.

Outcomes

Club members discover the core tools of photo editing software. These tools are the same the principles and demonstrations work on many editors including Photoshop, Luminar, etc.
Although aimed at novices, it is a good refresher for more advanced workers.

Objective

This workshop introduces five frequent topics that a judge might say. Followed by a bite-sized demonstration of how to achieve it your photo editor.

Format

The first part is an interactive slideshow, with examples and demonstrations along the way. After coffee break, you can work on your own files, or use those provided. (Files are sent to the programme secretary in advance and can be emailed out to members beforehand.)

Expenses

Normal PAGB travelling expenses plus £30. For remote (eg Zoom) presentations, ~~£50~~. Free during lockdown.

Digital novices are sometimes left behind following judges comments.

This workshop is a an interactive presentations, with short, bite-sized demonstrations. If they wish, members could bring their own Laptop and follow along.
